I was searching through old audio files on my computer today, and I found a recording of my high school band playing an “out-of-school” party at the beginning of one summer a few years ago.  I think we got paid for this one… I’d like to issue an apology to whoever signed that check.

I am absolutely floored.  Today has been such an exciting day for lots of reasons.
Over the past 8 months, I’ve written and produced some songs/recordings with two of my best friends in the whole world.  Now those songs are sitting at #11 on iTunes’ Christian charts.
But what does that mean?  11 is just a number, right?
I’ve definitely had a moment of feeling proud and conceited about the whole thing, thinking, “Hey, look what I did!”
But that didn’t really make much sense to me for very long.  It never does, and I hate that it’s my ‘go-to’ response (in my head, at least) for a lot of ‘good’ things that I’m involved in.

The fact is this:
Four months ago, we had over $12,000 worth of music gear stolen from our trailer.  That’s a lot of stuff.  Enough stuff that it made us feel powerless and debilitated.
But I don’t think that God really cares whether you have stuff or not.
My friend Ben (yes, the same Ben who bought that organ from my previous post) came up with a campaign to react with with love instead hate, through selling t-shirts and wristbands.
God is SO GOOD, guys.  I know the hearts of my friends in Heavens to Betsy and I know that He is in everything that they are doing.  For me tonight, that #11 means a victory for love.

Colossians 3: 15-17
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Corinthians 13: 1-7

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Almost every day, I catch myself worrying about the past and the future, usually to the point that I completely neglect the present.  Things I wish I’d have done, things I need to do, and things that might go wrong.  It’s almost like I’m looking at life through some square window that’s blocking out everything except my reservations and obligations.  So often, I focus in on such a small, meaningless part of such a boundless, beautiful life.  Thankfully, tonight I’m reminded to move in closer and look around to see who is really in control here.
Matthew 6: 25 - 34
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
            And why do you worry about clothes?  See how the flowers of the field grow.  They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying ‘what shall we eat?’ or ‘what shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Adventures in Craigslist

A couple weeks ago, my friend Ben bought a 1980 electric organ off of craigslist for $50.  It is awesome and it makes me jealous.  So, when I saw a listing on craigslist a couple days ago for a FREE electric organ, I naturally thought it was the deal of a lifetime.  I guess I should have known that it was too good to be true…but it did kind of turn into an opportunity for me to pretend to be David Thorne for a day..
